Asian Fusion Brunch Buffet at the Ibiza Beach Club

Seafood by the seaside overlooking the sea =)

We rounded up our trip to Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu with a fantabulous Asian Fusion Brunch Buffet at the Ibiza Beach Club indoor restaurant. The buffet boasts a panoply of flavors from Thailand, Japan, China, and beyond. A sweet bonus is a spectacular view of the sea from the floor to ceiling glass walls of the restaurant. Being a Thai and Japanese food lover, I was more than excited to try out the dishes here. As soon as I secured my seat (one that is near the glass panels for a nice view), I roamed around and checked out what’s on offer.

Not Your Ordinary Salad Bar
If you’re tired of the usual Caesar-potato-macaroni-Waldorf salad bar, then you’ll definitely love this one. There’s no lettuce-tossed-in-different-dressings here, but what you’ll encounter is a fine selection of Asian-inspired salads that are worth trying out. Most of these salads have a tinge of spiciness for the Asian tongue, so it will definitely tease your palates from the first bite. My favorites are Cold Ramen Roasted Duck, Prawns, Mint, Peanuts and Beetroot, and the Barbecue Chicken Salad  with Grilled Corn and Spicy Pineapple. The two salads taste closer to the Filipino palate, while the rest have more of Korean and Thai flavors.

Mussel Salad with Sweet Pickled Ginger and Chili Dressing

Stuffed Lapu-Lapu Korean Style

Cold Ramen Roasted Duck, Prawns, Mint, Peanuts and Beetroot

Grilled Pork and Sour Mango Salad Crisp, Mixed Greens, Sour Mango, Spiced Peanuts

Cocktails and Wines
And by the way, there’s a wide array of fine wines on offer at the Ibiza Beach Club. If you haven’t read yet, the owner of the resort has his own line of premium wines, and an oenophile himself, so you can be assured that you can enjoy a pour or two of your favorite wines here. Make sure to ask the staff for the perfect wine pairing. You might be lucky to meet the dazzling Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu’s F&B Manager, Daniel Trumpfheller.

Wines stacked stylishly at the Ibiza Beach Club

Aside from premium wines, there’s also a variety of cocktail concoctions and sparkling wines available. Yay, alcohol to kickstart the day!!!

Which one to start with?

Appetizers From Around Asia
There are no cold cuts and cheese sections here, but  you are sure to be delighted with a sumptuous array of starters. The Papaya, Apple, Marinated Dory, Cashew and Horseradish tastes like kinilaw (ceviche), only the fish is rather cooked than raw. The cured salmon is also good, although it should be a little colder in my opinion. The Korean Egg Roll with Smoked Salmon & Kimchi is a bit on the spicy side while the Guso and Tuna creates a Filipino take on the conventional tuna and nori maki. Guso is a kind of local seaweed and is a perfect alternative to nori.

Seafood Grill and Porchetta Carvery
I guess the most sinful stations at the Ibiza Beach Club’s Asian Fusion Brunch Buffet are the seafood grill and the carvery. You can select the freshest catch of the day on a bed of ice, still plump and juices intact, and have it cooked the way you want it. I had my favorites of course — crabs, scallops, squid, oysters, mussels, prawns, and clams. I had mine grilled outside, but told the staff not to overcook them so that they remain succulent and, well, sinful. I also got some wasabi mayonnaise dip for the prawns and squid. On my way to the grill, I saw the deadly Porchetta, lying perfectly on its carvery, with crisp skin and tender meat calling my name. That was WOW!

Roasted Duck and Dimsum Station
While most of the dishes here have a different spin, there’s still the traditional dimsum and other Chinese favorites. I’m not a big fan of roasted duck so I wasn’t able to try their version, but the Soy Chicken with Ginger Sauce and the Dried Chinese red BBQ Pork are delish! Plus, I love the Mushroom Dumpling and the Japanese Siomai dipped in soy-chili sauce.

Hang on, babies!

Dessert Station
The dessert station may not be that expansive but I found some gems there. I love the Mango Cheese Cake, so there’s no doubt I got a bunch of slices. It’s not that sweet and the cheesecake is not crumbly, so it was perfect. The Panna Cotta is a lighter choice, though. If you want something very Filipino, try the Maja Ube. The Chocolate Profiteroles are delectable but sinful. It won’t hurt to have a piece or two.

I ended up eating too much that I had to drink more sparkling wine in the end. The Asian Fusion Brunch Buffet at the Ibiza Beach Club will definitely knock you down so make sure you have enough tummy space before you go.

Enjoy all of these scrumptious treats for just Php 1,800 net per person, inclusive of free-flowing Celebrus Brut sparkling wine cocktails.

Bon appetit!

Of Bacon and Waffles: Breakfast at the Sails

The deadly delicious waffle

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I never skip it. It kick-starts my day and prepares me for whatever battle I’m off to later on. At night, before I even shut my eyes to sleep, I could already imagine the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the smell of buttery bread, with poached or sunny side up eggs on the side. Or the garlicky goodness of fried rice with crispy dried fish or deadly bacon. Continental breakfast is not for me. I eat heavy breakfast. I heart heavy breakfast.

So each time I am out of town or on a staycation, I highly appreciate if the hotel or resort I am staying in has at least a decent spread of early morning tummy fillers. And at Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu’s Sails Restaurant, I was more than pleased. Read on to know why.

The buffet spread might not be as expansive as the others, but the items are well curated. It’s not overwhelming, but just perfectly balanced — it has the basics and some items with a nice twist.

I usually start my day with a cup of brewed coffee and a piping hot bowl of soup to awaken my senses and prepare my tummy for yet another heavy meal. For breakfast, I prefer clear soups, and it’s a good thing that there’s miso soup complete with wakame seaweeds, chives, and Japanese tofu. It’s a good start, indeed.

Miso  soup

Next, I checked out the cheese and cold cuts station. It’s a sweet bonus that they have my favorite Brie, along with many others like Camembert, Edam, Cheddar, and Akisha’s favorite – Laughing Cow. I love my Brie together with raisins or some blueberries. The soft cheese and the fruity sweetness are the best combo.

Brie, my lovely Brie

At the cold cuts station, each serving is given to you freshly sliced. I found the beef pastrami best to pair with Brie and Cheddar. If cold cuts is not your thing, and you love that sinfully-crispy-oozing-with-fatty-goodness-pork-belly otherwise known as BACON, well you’re in the right place. The Sails’ homemade bacon is fried to perfection, and is rich in smoky flavors and a bit of that well-loved fat. I had more than 3 slices, man!

Cold cuts station

There was also a lady roaming around to offer guests with the power shot of the day. It was moringa-pineapple during that time, and everyone in the table got to try a shot (except me, sorry! I’m not into veggies). It looks healthy though, so for health buffs, you can have as many shots as you want to jumpstart your day!

Moringa-Pineapple Power Shot

The bread station is the yummiest-smelling station at the Sails. The intoxicating aroma of butter and cinnamon will definitely drive you crazy. I got one Danish and it was delicious – not too sweet, flaky just the way I want it. A soft roll with butter is also a staple.

Bread station

I was roaming around the other stations when I saw these cute little eggs benedict! I got one of course! The poached eggs drizzled with hollandaise sauce is love! I should have eaten more than one piece!

Eggs Benedict

There’s also a carvery station where they serve warm slices of meat. I didn’t have a slice but it looks delish too!

At the carvery

There’s also a fruits and cereals station where my friends had this pomelo and some pineapple slices among others. I’m not a big fan of fruits but I had a cup of yogurt for my daily fiber requirements. Hubby would sure be happy here as he loves fruits so much.

Pomelo

Make sure to save space for Sails’ ever famous waffles. I had one and it was the best waffle I’ve ever had — soft and buttery on the inside  and a bit crisp on the outside. Top it with blueberries and cream and you’re off to waffle wonderland. I wanted to put some vanilla ice cream on top but told myself to save  the ice cream for later.

I was already full to the brim when I finished my waffle and the last sip of my coffee. Overall, just like my first impression, the breakfast buffet at the Sails may not be as expansive but you can be sure you’ll have your old-time favorites here. There are enough options for adults and kids, alike, as well as for carnivores, vegans, health buffs and those with a sweet tooth. Bon appetit!

Things You Can Do in Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu

A view from the top

When I travel, I make sure to make the most out of my trip. I explore islands one after the other, indulge on the best local cuisine, learn history, and immerse on centuries-old culture and heritage. From the moment I book my plane ticket, I already have in mind which places I would like to visit, which restos I would try, and how I would spend the day on an hourly basis. Yes, I’m a bit obsessive-compulsive at that. But, to be honest, there are times when I just want to be carefree — to just sit back, relax, and enjoy, without having to stick on a fix itinerary. Without having to rush from one place to another. Without having to skip breakfast to catch the earliest bus, or to be disappointed when the museum I wish to see is under renovation. And this was what I did for a day at Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu. In this post, let me give you a glimpse of the things that you can enjoy while at one of Cebu’s finest resorts.

Beach-bumming
Your visit to Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu is not complete if you won’t walk barefoot on its powdery white sand beach. Yes, it may not be that expansive but the mere seclusion of the cove exudes intimacy and tranquility, something that busy people would die to have. Imagine lounging on one of the daybeds while reading a good book and having a sip of some refreshing buko shake or even a margarita. Man, that’s what you call a break.

The beachfront

Yoga, Pilates, and more
While waiting for my keycard at the front desk, I saw this poster with a list of activities that the resort offers. My eyes were glued on yoga and Pilates. How I wish I had brought my mat! There’s a cooking class, too, just like in Thailand where resorts conduct a crash course on local cuisine. That’s interesting! Kids can also enjoy myriad of play-and-learn activities.

The Game Room
If you are not a fan of outdoors, or simply not in the mood for sunbathing, you can check out the resort’s game room complete with a billiard table and Foosball. Families and friends can have some sort of bonding here, plus, come mid-afternoon and be ready for chocolate hour at the adjacent lobby lounge.

The Game Room

Chill-out at The Forum
While you are still conditioning yourself before having a dip at the pool, grab a frappe or a glass of cognac at The Forum, an elegant lounge just a few steps up from the pool. Dining al fresco here is a good idea, too!

The Forum

Swim, swim, and swim
For the kids and the young at heart, the swimming pool is a perfect spot to loosen up those stiff muscles without breaking a sweat. A few laps is good for the heart, as you may already know. What I like most about Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu’s pool is the series of white water lounge chairs where your group can have a chat while having a dip. Those small chairs  are just  so cute!

A view of the pool from The Forum

The daybeds

Do the trampoline
While the Ibiza Beach Club is famous for its Churrasco dinner, there’s one more thing I adore about the place — the trampoline lounges. These are located at the edge of the club near the hot tub. You can either sunbathe here, or just lie down and enjoy the view (huge fishes swimming from down under). It’s the best spot in the resort!

Trampoline lounges at the Ibiza Beach Club

Fish-feeding and snorkeling
While waiting for our tour guides to call us for our island hopping activities, we stayed at the benches near the entrance of the Ibiza Beach Club. Richard, of www.talesfromthetummy.com went to the other side and to his delight, saw the staff feeding the fishes with leftover bread! It turned out that guests are really allowed to feed these angels. So, he called me right away (because he knows I’m a snorkeling-fish-feeding addict) and we let the fishes eat like its Christmas eve, haha! If you have time, you can even go snorkeling at this area and swim with them. Kids will love this, too!

Fish attack!

Clubbing and Churrasco overload
There’s no better way to end a day in Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu but to chill out and have a round of drinks at the hip Ibiza Beach Club. My Churrasco dinner experience (see here) was amazing. I was on a food coma for the night! Make sure to have some cocktails (I personally love their Caipimara) while listening to chillout spin by their super good DJ. The music is real music (not noise) to the ears. It’s not overwhelming and nerve wracking at all!

The bar at the Ibiza Beach Club

While it’s nice to roam around nonstop where you’re in a foreign place, it is also worth it to have a laid-back, no frills moment from time to time. At Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu, you can do both. They can help you do both. =)

Churrasco Overload at the Ibiza Beach Club

Aside from island hopping and snorkeling along the pristine islands of Mactan and the Hilutungan Channel, I was also so excited to try Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu’s famous Churrasco Grill at the hip Ibiza Beach Club. On our first night, we were so fortunate to have tried it, and yes, we were in carnivores’ haven for awhile.

According to Wikipedia, the word “churrasco” is a Portuguese and Spanish term that refers to grilled meat more generally, differing across Latin America and Europe, but a prominent feature in the cuisine of Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and other Latin American countries.

Man, you must have seen how my eyes glowed at the sound of the word “meat”!

Ibiza Beach Club’s Churrasco Grill offers unlimited servings of 14 kinds of grilled to perfection meat and seafood, plus an eat-all-you-can salad bar and an option to have unlimited pour of Manny O house wine. All these at Php 2,000 (add Php 500 for unlimited wine). How cool is that?

Ibiza Beach Club’s posh bar

Plus, there’s a nightly world-class entertainment to make your senses busier while your taste buds are going gaga over delectable grilled stuff! When we were there, there was a series of production numbers – from flamenco to samba to fire-dance.

Salad bar

Cold Soba

Waldorf Salad

Among the appetizers and starters, the Pao de Queijo is my favorite. These chewy cheese buns are bursting with cheesy goodness without being too salty. It’s just perfect to tease your palate. Beware though not to over-stuff yourself as you have an entire feast coming your way.

Pao de Queijo

To complete the churrasco experience, different dips and sauces are served beforehand. There’s clarified butter, herbed butter, red wine butter, chimichurri, traditional soy-vinegar, and hot sauce.

A disc (one side green and the other, red) is also given to each guest. Putting the disc green side up means you want more servings, and putting it red side up means, well let’s say, you surrender.

Sauces and dips

So, let’s put the green side up and begin our churrasco feast!

Fillet Mignon
Just seeing the bacon snugly wrapped around cubes of beef made me drool. The smokey flavor of the bacon along with the succulent meat is just to die for. Mind you, we’ve only just begun.

Garlic rice is also served along with grilled veggies and a portion of yellow corn. But, just as I’ve said, save some tummy space.

Fillet Mignon

Lobster
These babies are just so delish. Light in texture but oozing with flavors. The soft meat is made flavorful with lemon, garlic and a dash of cayenne. Drizzle a bit of clarified butter and you’ll never want to turn your disc red up again. One bite and you’ll be in seafood heaven. Trust me.

Lobster

Calamari
They said if a squid is huge, it may be too tough when not cooked the right way. That being said, the well seasoned calamari served at the churrasco grill must have been cooked to perfection as it is not rubbery at all. There’s a tinge of spice in it, something that is close to Spanish paprika. Again, I recommend you try this with a drizzle of clarified butter and a gulp of Chardonnay.

Calamari

Jumbo Prawns
Another one that goes well with clarified butter, the Jumbo Prawns are grilled just right, without sacrificing its natural juices. Squeeze some lemon to complement its garlicky taste. Again, round it up with a gulp of Chardonnay.

Jumbo Prawns

Beef Short Ribs
This tender, melt-in-your-mouth barbecued beef ribs is bursting with sweet and spicy flavors that will definitely make you do one thing — get some extra rice and a glass of Pinot Noir. The fruity hint of Pinot Noir adds a perfect balance to the sweet and tangy barbecue sauce.

Beef Short Ribs

Leg of Lamb
While I am not a big fan of lamb, I still find this one worth a try. This succulent slice of meat is made even more delectable with a tinge of garlic and rosemary. Add some red wine butter and you’ll definitely love it.

Leg of Lamb

Pork Belly
The skin is as crispy and sinful as bagnet or porchetta, but the meat is tender and not dry. The taste is very Pinoy, add to that a drizzle of soy-vinegar sauce with onions and chili made it taste like your mom’s lechon kawali. It’s a perfect beer match.

Pork Belly

Rib-Eye
This rib-eye may look too basic, but don’t get deceived. The marbling made it bathe in its own juicy goodness, and the trimmings of charred fat (yes, FAT!) are just so divine. Have it medium or medium rare,  to fully enjoy it. Wash it down with Cabernet Sauvignon or a full-bodied Merlot.

Rib-Eye

Baby Back Ribs
Another sweet-tangy offering at the churrasco grill, this slow-cooked baby back ribs is fall-of-the-bone tender and is perfect with garlic rice and ice-cold beer.

Baby Back Ribs

Parrot Fish
If by this time you feel like you are having meat overload, it’s about time to have some zesty fish, a parrot fish at that. Marinated in white wine and herbs, this one is too tasty that you won’t need additional sauces. But, just in case you insist, drizzle clarified butter and a squeeze of lemon to have an extra amp.

Parrot Fish

Chicken Thigh
The flavors are bursting inside and out, thanks to their secret special marinade. I could see a dash of freshly-cracked pepper and could taste a tinge of citrus. oh, and did I mention it’s sooooooo tender?

Chicken Thigh

Ostrich
It was a first time for me to try this cut, and I swear I almost thought I was eating an excellent cut of beef. The garlic and rosemary were able to conceal a bit the much-dreaded aftertaste. I managed to clear out the hint of aftertaste with a gulp of Merlot, but I think a glass of chilled Barolo — the taste of oak provides yin and yang.

Ostrich

Lamb Chops
Again, I am not a big fan of lamb, but everyone at our table’s going crazy about this. I could sniff the inviting smell of thyme and peppercorn in the air.

Lamb Chops

As a sweet ending, do not miss the grilled pineapples (usually from Ormoc) marinated in cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves and garnished with chunky pistachios. Try to get the slice that is more charred, believe me, it’s the best. Then, order a scoop of vanilla or caramel ice cream and you’re off to a different high. Because of that, I forgot to take a photo of this dessert. It’s that good.

Oh, and please do try their refreshing cocktails. My bet? Try the Caipimara…It’s mind-blowing.

With Jane Chua, Richie Zamora, and Richard Co together with the performers at the Ibiza Beach Club

So, if you happen to be in Cebu, do indulge at the Ibiza Beach Club. The Churrasco Grill is worth it.

Caution: Be ready for food coma! =)
